A "Wahlarzt" is a doctor working in the private medical sector who does not have a contractual agreement with the National Health Service. The term is derived from the patient's right to freely choose their own doctor.
Who can choose a private medical doctor?
Everyone. A referral is not necessary in principle, but is of course possible from any doctor (National Insurance doctor or a private doctor).
Who pays for the medical costs?
A private medical doctor does not have a direct contract with the National Health Service. For patients, this means that they must first pay the fee themselves to the doctor of their choice. Neither can the treatment be paid by using the e-card. However, the payment receipt can be submitted to your National Health Service with a request for reimbursement of the treatment costs. You will receive a partial refund from your National Health Service. Medical services that are not included in the list of the National Health Service , i.e. services that are not paid for by the National Health Services, will not be reimbursed.
